About Me
My name is John Nevel, also known in professional circles as "the king of poetry," and "the poetic genius." I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 8th, 1982, but spent a majority of my childhood in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

I have been writing poetry since I was 12 years old, perfecting my style by studying and gaining inspiration from several of my favorite authors, which include: Rod Serling, Edgar Allan Poe, Nicholas Sparks, Maya Angelou, Anne Rice, Stephen King, and Bentley Little. I enjoy writing poetry that feeds the imagination. Poetry that is inspired by my life's journey, current events, and feelings and emotions that flow through me on a daily basis.
At 17, I dropped out of the eleventh grade to obtain a GED. At 19, I joined the United States Army to serve my country. I spent a year deployed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003-2004. I spent 4 years in the military, earning the Army Commendation, Army Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary, and Global War on Terrorism Service medals. After exiting the military, I obtained a master's degree in criminal justice. I then attended school for a PhD in public safety, earning 88 credits before dropping out due to personal reasons.

At 34, I started competing in masters track and field. As an athlete, I have won 16 gold medals (at the state, regional, and national level), 1 All American award in the 50m dash, and have placed top 25 in the United States thirteen times. Specializing in the 50m dash, javelin throw, and the triple jump, I have competed in 11 USATF masters track & field championships in 6 years of competing. I also occasionally walk or run in local 5k and 10k events.

My family and I spent 10 years in Pueblo, Colorado, before moving to our new home in New Bern, North Carolina in 2022.
I have done a lot in my life, from meeting people from all over the world, to learning about their cultures. I have worked as a grocery store bagger and stocker, a soldier, record label owner, vocalist, detention deputy, youth behavior coach, high school mentor, basketball coach, track & field coach, magazine staff writer, non-profit president, cab driver, delivery driver, qualified medication administration person, notary public, store manager, econ0mic development specialist, community development manager, and social worker.
I believe that everyone should be treated equally. I don't care if a person is white, black, skinny, fat, rich, poor, gay, or straight. I always treat people the same, and do not discriminate.

I am a lover of many genres of music, Disneyland and Universal Studios, sports, fishing, working out, bingo, animals, and soul food! Now, after starting my professional career as an award-winning poet, my goal is to deliver some of the most mind-blowing, inspirational poetry the world has ever seen. Welcome to my imagination...and I hope you enjoy the ride!
